Deep Roots Music Cooperative invites submissions for our Emerging Artists Program 2011. Young artists will have the chance to take a realistic look into what it takes to succeed in the industry. Many of the province's top industry professionals will present workshops on many of the unique areas of the music industry such as: marketing and promotion; getting played and getting paid on the radio; booking concerts, festivals, and other events; recording; applying for grants: free money from the government, and more!

All artists will have the chance to perform at our Emerging Artist Showcase event.

TUESDAY, JULY 19

10:00am - Introduction to Music Nova Scotia with Serge Sampson

Music Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization that has worked since 1989 with a mandate to encourage the creation, development, growth and promotion of Nova Scotia's music industry.

Music Nova Scotia exists to grow and nurture the Nova Scotia music industry, to retain our own natural resource and promote investment, by:
- Providing education, information and resources to our membership
- Acting as the advocate for the industry to all levels of government and private enterprise
- Supporting membership in the promotion of the export of Nova Scotia music regionally, nationally and internationally

2:00pm - Introduction to SOCAN with Tim Hardy

SOCAN is the Canadian copyright collective that administers the performing rights of more than 100,000 composer, author and music publisher members by licensing the use of their music in Canada. We collect licence fees on their behalf and distribute royalties to them.

10:00am - Grant Opportunities with Mickey Quaise

Mickey Quaise is the director of the Nova Scotia Tourism and Culture Emerging Artist Program, which offers grant opportunites for up and coming artists, including up to $4000 to record a record, study with a musical mentor, or market a new product.

2:00pm - Benefits of Studio Recording VS. D.I.Y. Recording

Charles Austin is the head engineer and producer of Echo Chamber Studios in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has engineered and produced studio records, home recording, and all projects inbetween for local and national artists alike.

4:00pm - Artist Q&A with Dave Carroll, Thom Swift, and Jenny MacDonald

This is your chance to ask what you've always wanted to know about the life of an artist. These three experienced musicians open the floor for your questions:

Dave Carroll is most notoriously known for his United Breaks Guitars Youtube video series, and also has a long history as a touring musician, public speaker, and songwriter.

Thom Swift's musical reputation was established with over 15 years of touring and recording with the acclaimed blues-jazz group, Hot Toddy Trio. With nine albums to their credit and multiple awards, the group toured extensively nationally and abroad.

His debut recording Into the Dirt won an ECMA, a Maple Blues Award, a Galaxie Rising Star prize and two Music Nova Scotia Awards, including Musician of the Year and Blues Recording of the Year in 2008.

Jenny MacDonald is a graduate of the Nova Scotia Community College's Music Arts and Business program, receiving the program's "Highest Achievement Award". Jenny has studied under a number of musicians, composers, studio engineers, promoters, and music business professionals in and outside of the college's walls including; Gordie Sampson (Songwriter), Tom Easley (Hot Toddy), Waye Mason (Halifax Pop Explosion), Matt Charlton (Pigeon Row Publicity), Erin Costello (Songwriter/Performer), Jorge Chicoy, Avi Garcia, and Silvio Pupo (Los Primos - CUBA), and many more.

Jenny's most recent album was 100% government grant and fan-funded, using the tools that have become necessity for today's artists. A D.I.Y. recording project with Scott Hupman, the album has taken flight, launching a national tour in June 2011.

Applicants must submit the following:
- The completed application form.
- A sample of your work - A three song recording which must include at least one original composition. This can be submitted as an MP3, website or MySpace link or by CD.
- A 1/2 page bio - Describe your musical style, influences and what inspires you to play music.

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JULY 15TH, 2011
There will be an attendance fee of $100 for all accepted applications.
